The French Quarter lies at the very center of the city and is known for its rich history, lively nightlife, and colorful buildings with cast-iron balconies. Jackson Square, where street performers amuse in front of the soaring St. Louis Cathedral, and the French Market, where gourmet food and local crafts are sold, may be reached via quieter streets.
The Mississippi River is the primary tributary of the North American drainage system that is second in size only to the Hudson Bay drainage system in terms of total area. Historically, it begins in Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota and travels a total of 2,340 miles (3,770 km) usually south to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. The whole 1,151,000 square mile (2,980,000 square kilometer) drainage basin, including the main stem, is located in the United States. According to global river discharge rankings, the Mississippi comes in at number thirteen. States of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana have a border with or are traversed by the river.
