Our entryway opens up into our dining room (behind the camera) and it’s just so dull and lifeless. We were thinking about painting the door black because every other door in our house is black. But what else can we do to give it life and depth?

Very slim console table or floating shelf on wall under mirror, with a vase with flowers. Larger entry rug that picks up whatever colors you have going on in the rest of the space. Also more interesting light fixture.
more color and a larger rug. console station for keys, coats.
… add literally anything. Plants. Art. A rug with color.
Translucent door.
I would do a larger entry rug maybe 3×5, a small piece of art and key hooks to the right of the door, and maybe a larger mirror to fill the wall or a large piece of art instead of the mirror since you can’t block the stairs.
Change the mirror, hang a long mirror and some small shelves along the mirror behind the door where that small dip in the wall is and like someone suggested a bigger rug.
Painting the door black is such a good call if all your other doors match! We did something similar and it made such a difference. I’d also maybe try a small console table or bench on that left wall with a few hooks above it? Gives it that “landing zone” feel without taking up much space.
Why not place some plant pots either side of the gate
