Today, I’m staying at the Old Cataract Hotel Aswan, most luxurious hotel in Egypt. The hotel is famous for being the place where British author Agatha Christie stayed and wrote her novel “Death on the Nile.”

1899-1900: Established. The Old Cataract Hotel’s historic Palace Wing was built by the British company Thomas Cook in 1899 and opened as a hotel in January 1900. It features Victorian architecture and Moorish-style interiors.

1902: Expansion. Architect Henri Favargé designed the iconic 1902 Restaurant, featuring a 23-meter-tall dome and Moorish arches inspired by Cairo’s Mamluk mosques.

1937: Literary fame. Agatha Christie stayed at the hotel for nearly a year, providing the setting and inspiration for her famous mystery novel, “Death on the Nile.”

1961: New building. A nine-story modern wing (the Nile Wing) was added.

1978: Film adaptation. The hotel served as a key location for the film “Death on the Nile,” starring Peter Ustinov.

2008-2011: Restoration. The hotel closed for three years for a major restoration by Sofitel, reopening as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan.

2026-2027: A new era. Mandarin Oriental will take over management on May 1, 2026, and after further renovations to the Nile Wing, the hotel is scheduled to be rebranded in July 2027.
