Could everything we know about carbs and chronic illness be wrong? In this eye-opening episode, Dan Buettner sits down with Dr. Neal Barnard, founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, to dismantle the biggest myths in modern nutrition.

Dr. Barnard reveals groundbreaking clinical research suggesting that Type 2 diabetes isn’t caused by rice or bread, but by a “cellular oil slick” that prevents the body from processing sugar. He shares a radical, low-fat plant-based protocol that allows patients to eat unlimited carbohydrates while effectively reversing the disease.

The conversation also dives into a “hot flash cure” for women in menopause—an 88% reduction in symptoms achieved in just 12 weeks through simple dietary shifts—and explores why food, not the pharmacy, may be the most powerful tool for ending chronic pain, migraines, and heart disease.

Whether you are looking to lose weight effortlessly or future-proof your health, Dr. Barnard provides a science-backed roadmap to a longer, pain-free life.

  1. Fantastic, thank you both … Btw, the menstrual cramps thing…. It's not the reduction in Estrogen, it's the reduction ok calcium…. Calcium causes cramping and also antagonised magnesium, needed for relaxing. Plant based foods are higher in magnesium and lower in calcium ( dairy is way to high in calcium… ) and that's a good thing! ….

Calcium in such high amounts is NOT needed for strong bones ( or there could be NO osteoporosis iin all of USA .. ) and estrogen is NOT the enemy. .. Estrogen is absolutely needed for optimal health – hence the great decline in health we see in women who are not on her afterenioause and also men – though less suddenly in men – as their testosterone levels decrease. .. Hormones are no the enemy., they are needed for full and optimal body functionality. . .

  2. Also, I've been 100% low fat whole foods plant based vegan since 2000 and love soy ( milk, tofu, edamame.. ) but got the worst hot flashes ever in perienopause… Along with a whole host of other peri and menopause symptoms …

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy first have "side effects" when used correctly, it just replaces missing hormones…. It took care of all the symptoms and more – that I didn't know were hormone related….

Estrogen again, is not the baddie… It even cures joint pains and the arthritis that you mentioned – as long as it hasn't progressed so far as to cause permanent damage…

  3. Sorry, I'm not being spammy, I promise…. I just wanted to add that I love you both greatly and the world is a souch better place because of the knowledge and service you have both provided…. And any information that I added was not in any way meant to take away from the amazing information and TRUTH that you do freely share and are sharing in this video, which I also personally can attrst to for the last 25+ years…

We would all be so much healthier and happier if we ate in this way…. The world would be almost unrecognisable… Everything would flourish….. Science, the arts, relationships, nature etc etc etc…

  4. It is difficult to get people to think preventatively, which is why it’s helpful to hear all these different theories and tips on your podcasts. I think more people need to adopt the plant based diet and cook at home! Thanks for sharing!

  5. My sister, who is only 37, has stage IV breast cancer, diabetes, and medullary thyroid cancer. Doctors say she may have about two years to live. She is very afraid, and I am heartbroken, crying often and struggling with fear, uncertainty, and helplessness. I’m holding onto hope and prayer, but this has been very difficult, and I need support and understanding.

  6. To say not to worry about sugar and eating lots of carbs and eliminating all fats from one’s diet is absolutely absurd. This is the advice that dates back decades ago and is completely off base. Go listen to podcasts from Function Health and Levels and especially Dr Robert Lustig and Dr Mark Hyman. You dudes have no clue what you’re talking about and I challenge you to debate them in an another podcast. Bottom line – eliminate all refined sugar and ultra processed foods and eat more omega 3 fats. Fiber is the reason you can eat fruits that have sugar because it reduces the glucose excursion and insulin reaction. With all the science out there you’re still trying to push a vegan diet. Cmon stop trying to deceive the public

  7. Seems backwards to call the baby soybeans edamame😊 Call them edababy, and call the full-grown soybeans edamame (edamommy). 😊

  8. How about an episode where you explain why someone begins and stays on a 100% plant-based diet at age 77, then suffers a heart attack at ag 82 with a leaky valve and two heart arteries at 90% and 80% blockage. Why didn't the arteries clear?

What precipitated the discovery of heart attack and heart failure, vascular disease, etc., was long-term use of a catheter to avoid prostate surgery, finally agreeing to the surgery due to chronic UTI, which led to sepsis the day after surgery. That's when I found out I had suffered a "quiet" heart attack and further tests showed all the rest, such as ejection fraction of ~= 35. Then the hospital treatments and terrible food and little sleep caused me to get a C-diff infection which put me in the hospital a third time in two months.

So, again, why didn't the 5 years of purely vegan diet make me healthy enough to avoid a heart attack at least? I surely do wish I could get an answer, but I won't hold my breath.

  9. I believe Dr. Barnard. I eat plenty of carbs and often overdo chocolate, yet I'm not diabetic. I'm in my 60's. 90% vegan (I occasionally eat sardines for omega 3; chia seeds give me diarrhea and flaxseeds so expensive here).
