The grape varieties grown in Germany’s sunny Pfalz and the style of the wines produced do not differ markedly from those encountered in France’s Alsace just to the south. This Grauer Burgunder – or Pinot Gris – from Fritz Walter is a real bargain buy. The wine has a restrained nose that promises mature fruit but in the palate it bursts into life, with ripe citrus matched to apricot-peach and a zingy, grapefruity bite. To accompany pink-fleshed fish and flavourful salads, serving temperature around the 9-10 degree mark. Worth a try!
