Welcome to Cannes,
another paradise on the French Riviera for the rich and famous,
renowned for its international film festival,
global trade fairs,
luxurious hotels, restaurants and beautiful sandy beaches.
Due to its tendering facilities and the proximity
to Nice, Monaco, Monte Carlo and Villefranche,
the port of Cannes is a frequent stop in Mediterranean cruise itineraries.
In this video,
I share with you an overview of Cannes cruise port,
along with the best things to do in Cannes!
There are no docking facilities for large cruise vessels in the port of Cannes.
Cruise ships anchor in the Bay of Cannes
and the port authorities provide the tender boats
to transfer the cruise passengers to Cannes Old Port,
also known as Vieux Port de Cannes.
Old Port is located in the city center,
within a short walking distance from Promenade de la Croisette,
Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and Le Suquet,
the old town of Cannes.
Old Port is a picturesque place where you’ll see many yachts and boats.
Only small vessels can dock here
including the ferries.
A tender pier and cruise terminal are equipped with basic facilities,
including a tourist information office and parking for buses and taxis.
A taxi station can also be found outside the terminal area
at the Old Port.
Cannes Old Town and the famous Promenade de la Croisette
are located within a short walk from the port,
so the city is definitely best visited on foot.
If you want to avoid walking and see the main city landmarks,
you can take Le Train du Cinéma,
also known as Le Petit Train de Cannes,
a small tourist train that departs from La Croisette (Palais des Festivals)
and offers three different tours.
Each one lasts 1 hour
and includes stops at the major city landmarks,
such as the Forville Market and Le Suquet (Cannes Old Town).
Upon exiting the pier where the tenders drop you off,
on your left and right you’ll spot the beautiful sandy beaches of Cannes.
On the left side,
a stunning Plage du Midi is a scenic stretch of sandy beach
known for its vibrant atmosphere and clear turquoise waters.
With its convenient amenities,
it’s a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying beachside cafes and restaurants.
On the right side,
a beautiful sandy Croisette Beach lines the Boulevard de la Croisette,
and features beach facilities, beach clubs, eateries and cafes.
The Old Port is a charming waterfront area
that offers a picturesque setting with colorful boats bobbing in the harbor
against the backdrop of old buildings and bustling cafes.
You can enjoy leisurely strolls along the promenade lined with luxurious yachts,
take in the panoramic views of the bay,
or indulge in fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants.
Less than a 10-minute walk from the Old Port,
you’ll come across the iconic Promenade de la Croisette,
also known as Boulevard de la Croisette or La Croisette,
the famous waterfront boulevard that extends 2 km along the city’s coastline.
The boulevard is home to the prestigious Palais des Festivals et des Congrès,
a convention center that hosts the Cannes Film Festival,
which is one of the most renowned film festivals globally,
attracting filmmakers, celebrities and industry professionals from around the world.
Additionally,
the city also hosts the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity,
focusing on advertising and creative communications,
and the Cannes Yachting Festival,
showcasing luxury yachts and marine innovations.
Adjacent to the convention center is one of the most famous Casinos in Cannes,
as well as a Tourist Information Office that you can visit and get all information on Cannes.
The convention center is surrounded by a beautiful park and promenade
offering beautiful views of Croisette Beach and the Old Port.
From there,
continue walking down the Boulevard de la Croisette,
the iconic promenade famed for its glamorous atmosphere and vibrant Cannes lifestyle.
The famous La Croisette is also home to luxurious hotels (such as Carlton, Majestic, JW Marriott Cannes and Martinez)
upscale restaurants and expensive shops that stretch along the road and overlook a sandy Croisette Beach.
After the walk along the boulevard,
you should head toward Le Suquet,
Cannes’ Old Town,
located only a 10-minute walk away.
While Cannes Old Port and Boulevard de la Croisette are entirely flat and easy to walk,
Le Suquet is hilly and may be challenging for people with walking difficulties.
Le Suquet is the original fishermen’s residential area
with very old houses,
some of them more than 400 years old.
This area is pedestrianized and packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops,
centered around Rue Saint Antoine
and Rue de Suquet.
The old town is hilly and there are the remains of the medieval castle of the monks of Lérins at the top,
known as Château de la Castre.
The medieval castle is located on Place de la Castre
from where you can enjoy the outstanding views of the city and the Bay of Cannes.
It also houses the Musée de la Castre,
also known as the Musée des Explorations du Monde,
which showcases a diverse collection of artifacts,
including ethnographic treasures,
musical instruments from Africa, Asia, Oceania and America,
and artworks from around the world.
These include, among others,
the primitive arts of Himalaya-Tibet and Oceania,
pre-Columbian America and Mediterranean antiquities,
and also orientalist paintings and objects from the 19th century.
The entrance to the museum costs 6.5€ (price from 2024)
and it’s absolutely worth it.
Wait to see why!
Not many people know that you can actually climb the museum’s iconic tower,
and admire the most spectacular views of Cannes!
To get to the top,
you need to climb 109 steep steps inside the tower,
leading you to a small door that marks the entrance to the top.
Once on the top,
you can take in the 360-degree view of Cannes
which will leave you absolutely speechless!
I guarantee this is the best panoramic view of Cannes that you can have,
so do not miss to visit this amazing place!
Next to La Castre,
you’ll also find Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance,
a historic stone church dating from the 17th century.
The church is known for its Neo-Gothic architecture,
intricate stained-glass windows,
and beautiful religious artworks that you can admire inside.
You can also enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the city and sea,
from its elevated location in Le Suquet.
Besides Rue du Suquet and Rue Saint-Antoine,
Rue Meynadier is another famous street in the Old Town.
This cobblestone, vibrant street is known for its lively atmosphere
and diverse array of shops and boutiques.
From charming, typically French bistros,
to bakeries, trendy fashion stores and souvenir shops,
Rue Meynadier offers something for every shopper.
However,
keep in mind that some shops may be closed on Sunday.
From this street,
Forville Market (aka Marché Forville) is another must-see place located in the heart of Cannes.
This bustling market offers a feast for the senses
and is renowned for its fresh produce,
including colorful fruits and vegetables,
aromatic herbs, and all types of cheeses and meats.
Visitors can wander through the lively stalls,
sampling delicious delicacies, and soaking in the lively atmosphere
filled with the sounds of vendors calling out their offerings.
From gourmet treats to artisanal crafts and flowers,
Forville Market is a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts,
and those seeking a taste of authentic Cannes culture.
Last but not least,
only a 5-minute walk from the market,
you can explore the Main Square of Cannes,
and the area around Splendid Hotel.
Besides lavish fountains and the iconic City Hall building (Mairie de Cannes),
here you can find dozens of stalls selling local handicrafts,
artworks and authentic souvenirs.
This is a lively area where you can see locals playing games,
children having fun,
and people enjoying the local vibe in numerous restaurants surrounding the square.
This area is right across the Old Port,
less than a 10-minute walk from the tender pier.
And now, if you decide to explore outside the city,
head to one of the famous French Riviera destinations
such as Nice, Monaco, Monte Carlo, or Antibes.
Cannes train station, also known as Gare de Cannes,
is located 700 m or less than a 10-minute walk from the Old Port.
This is also the main bus station in Cannes.
From there,
you can catch trains to all major cities, towns and villages in Côte d’Azur.
The trains run frequently and are operated by SNCF,
the national railway company.
You can check the timetables and prices on the official website (link in the description),
and you purchase the tickets online,
on the “SNCF Connect” app,
or at the ticket machines and kiosks at the train station.
I’ll have separate videos on Nice, Antibes,
Monaco and Monte Carlo,
so make sure you check out the links in the description of this video.
