In France, cooking on a budget during a heatwave becomes less about elaborate meals and more about getting sensible, filling food on the table without turning the kitchen into a furnace or bankrupting yourself at the supermarket. With food prices steadily climbing, a lot of people are quietly abandoning the fantasy of beautiful market-table spreads and going back to simple, practical meals that work in hot weather. The French have long understood the value of eating seasonally. You also learn very quickly during a heatwave that nobody wants heavy food or a boiling kitchen. The reality now is that many households are adapting not out of some romantic rustic lifestyle, but because rising electricity bills, expensive meat, and eye-watering supermarket prices leave very little room for waste or convenience foods.

Hi both. Your meals look delicious as always 👅 😊
Hope it's not too hot down there…. It's been roasting here in southern England for a few days, with record May temperatures, and although things are cooling slightly it is still forecast to hit 26 degrees C tomorrow here in Hampshire. News reports suggest the heatwave has hit most of Europe! Yikes!!
Thank you- great meals here, and we'll be trying the clafouti with the cherries we just got
Really enjoyed the clafoutis making session; I've not tried to make it for years and when I did it was too floury and chewy, like you said, more like batter pudding with cherries in! I'm so glad you stoned your cherries; I gather some French purists maintain you should leave the stones in for the almond flavour, the very thought of which makes me begin to choke!
Good idea, using the air fryer outside with the heat.
My pup's mum is called Mary Puppins ,my pup is Pip Puppins you may remember I commented before ,Pip is now 10 months old .Lovely meals btw x
Jane, such a classic we had it this week in Melbourne Australia. Beans, eggs, chips and the required sauso added for hubby.
Amazing meals in hot weather ☀️
Thank you for the culinary inspiration ☺️
Another varied selection of meals. Like you we didn't want to heat up the kitchen in our UK heatwave. I made big bowls of minty cous cous salad, a chickpea, potato and green bean salad, roast vegetables and a large foccacia loaf and with hummus that served us well for a few days keeping it all well refrigerated. Definitely worth the effort at the beginning of the high temperatures.
Terrific variety Jane, you are a very thoughtful cook for variety and interesting meals.
Thanks, Jane, for sharing your tasty & inspirational recipes, I'm going to try making your gluten free pizza the crust sounds interesting, always up for a new taste experience, and as cherries are my favourite fruit & I have a lot of frozen cherries going to make the cherry clafoutis for this week's desert treat! Lovely to see you in the sunny warm garden with Mary Poppins
very courageous to do that much cooking during the canicule!! the cherries i bought weren't great. I heard from French friends that you need to leave the pits in the cherries as they impart a better flavour…. but I would also pit them as I hate having to spit them out from cake!
I made a Quinoa tomato and cucumber salad
I had a hard boiled egg and string cheese for breakfast
I made a beef stew with carrots and small white potatoes
Great selection of meals, egg and chips is a classic. 😄
Absolutely love hearing the chapel bells 🔔
oh that clafoutis is BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for sharing!! We ( 2 of us) bought a 6 lb chicken for 11$ and are planning to make a traditional chicken, potato and carrot and stuffing meal / stuffed peppers and vegetables/ chicken pot pie/ chicken and fried rice/ and soup/. Multiple meals for an 11$ chicken! Now mind you we don’t use the chicken as the main part of the meal! Love that you cook frugally and you share your meals!!! Thanks so much for sharing! 😊
Yummy looking soup, nice and thick, at first I thought it was lentils, which I love. When I do my beans I use pinto beans and make what we call pot beans, just onion garlic water beans and salt and pepper…cook till tender. Every time I watch your food videos I get hungry LOL.
Monday we had fried eggplant, corn, roasted cauliflower, tossed salad. Tuesday was turkey tenderloin, mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables. Wednesday was a simple lasagna with salad, Thursday was chicken cacciatore with an arugula salad and Today was chicken soup with and carrots and watermelon.
Ooooooh, that clafoutis looks so decadent and delightful! Thank you for sharing. 🙂 It isn't cherry season here yet (I live across the pond in eastern Canada), but I will be making this in a month or so. <3 Thank you!!!
