You think your food is weird? Medieval peasants were eating blood sausages, insects, and even rats just to survive, and some still exist today.
From toxic tansy omelets to jellied pig scraps and sour, chunky milk, this video dives into the brutal reality of what people actually ate in the Middle Ages.
Food wasn’t about taste, it was about survival. Every scrap counted, from pig’s feet and organ pies to rats, frogs, and even insects when times got desperate.
You’ll see how preservation methods like fermentation, pickling, and even burying butter in bogs kept people alive, while creating some of the strangest dishes ever recorded.
And it doesn’t stop there. Ale was safer than water, weeds became meals, and even bread could be mixed with sawdust when supplies ran low.
Some of these foods are long gone for a reason, others are still eaten today, just slightly less terrifying.
This isn’t history you learned in school, this is what survival actually looked like.

Im guessing cannibalistic feast was a option as well. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
With the measley food the majority of us Americans eat here, I can't help but feel like a peasant.
They can be glad that they did not have to eat Mc Donalds!
Who gets to eat raw pig ass? I'd still throw it over a firepit and add salt to at least give some kind of flavour.
The ballroom is the third temple
medieval bakers really went "we're out of flour, let's add sawdust" and just hoped nobody noticed 💀

Majority of this stuff is just what british people call fancy dining.
A lot of these things are still served in Belgium
No introduction?? Medieval folks were straight up dancing with death. The more i learn about what they ate even the nobles and royals, the more I am surprised they survive 😭 like how are europeans not extinct?

Canned silkworm is still eaten in Korea today.
this feels like part two of a part one video
Dandelions and stinging nettles are healthier than any of the modern vegetables in the grocery store!
And best of all, you can pick them up for free from your own yard! ^^
Dandelion flowers can be eaten raw and kinda taste like a dry lettuce.
Just make sure you pick them away from polluted areas as they absorb pollutants like heavy metals very easily.
