Ep.198 We spent 16 days in Bangkok, Thailand, and we’re sharing everything we’d do differently, including why where you stay matters more than you think, how to navigate Bangkok’s historic temples without the crowds and heat working against you, and how to avoid the most common tourist scam near Wat Pho, which we personally encountered. We also found one of the coolest neighborhoods in Bangkok that most travelers completely skip. It was one of our all-time favorite neighborhoods, and we can’t wait to show it to you. We’ll also share the complete cost breakdown for everything we spent. ❤️ https://youtu.be/ZTz9j4QFamQ

  1. Love Bangkok. I always stay at the Dusit Thani or the Crowne Plaza, which are both along Sukhumvit and close to the Lumpini Park which is the green lung of Bangkok.

  2. Great video! Thanks for your insightful takes on Bangkok.
As an aside, Judy, I love your skirt you're wearing and I was wondering the brand and / or where you got it? It's a nicer look than shorts without being too fussy.
    Thanks for any info.

  3. I am totally not a very busy city person and usually prefer quiet places too. However, I surprised myself by really loving Bangkok. I think what made the difference is that my hotel was located really close to the river which made getting around super easy. I also did a Tuktuk Food tour which was super fun and really interesting as our guide told us so much about the culture too, as well as doing a small boat trip through the small hidden canaks which gave a great insight to daily life along the canals. Thanks for another great video! 😊

  4. We are currently in Kuala Lumpur. Having a similar experience. Too hot to walk far and not close to the MRT. We are using Grab to get around, doing things in the mornings and spending time inside malls. We would like to visit Bangkok so I will keep your video in mind when we are planning.

  5. In 1990 I wanted to travel around the world for a year. In reality, I spent three months in Bangkok and five years in Chiang Mai. 😂😂 I love Thailand ❤

  6. I've been living in Singapore since 2010 so heat and humidity are the norm. don't worry about sweating because everyone else is too. i grew up in Chicago which is a far cry from the equator. when in Rome…

  7. Bangkok just has a way of keeping you . It’s convenient and charming , hectic yet has a calm energy. I love and hate it at the same time. I’ve stayed all over..but I think I have a small preference for staying nearby the river in a building with a view. The breeze is just unmatched

  8. I’ve been watching your channel for over a year and kept wondering when you’d finally visit my hometown! Being born and raised in Bangkok in the 90s, I actually suspected you might not like it—mainly because it isn't a walkable city at all—so I’m pleasantly surprised you enjoyed yourself.

My biggest tip for visitors is to plan around the heat: head out early, retreat to your accommodation or a mall during the midday sun, and head back out after 5:00 PM. In Bangkok, malls aren't just for shopping; they are a way of life and where locals go to survive the humidity!

  9. The Talat Noi neighborhood looks so cool, reminds me of Williamsburg or Wynwood in Miami! I feel like Bangkok has been having a moment over the past 5 years or so ans how many people rave about it, like CDMX. Looking forward to your European leg next!

  10. We love Bangkok and have really enjoyed staying at the CentrePoint Silom Hotel. It is a 5 minute walk from the Saphan Taksin BTS station and the Sathorn Pier (major river ferry terminal ). The rooms are large, have kitchenettes and a washing machine, and the prices are quite good. We also loved Talat Noi, it featured prominently in our video on surviving a day in Bangkok after a 15-hour flight from Vancouver.

  11. We stayed at Conrad Bangkok and loved the location. Walking distance to parks and mrt. Grabs are so cheap it was easy to get river and sights. Loved Bangkok. Can’t wait to go back

  12. It's so helpful to hear your thoughts on this city, Kevin and Judy! This part of the world is high up on my travel list because of the affordability factor. However, now I understand how critical location is. I loved the park and The Little Prince coffee shop, as well as all of the street art.

Hope you're both doing well. I thought I detected a little congestion in Kevin's voice.

Here in the southern US we have similar coping skills for the heat and humidity in the summer. AC is your friend, move slowly, and don't go out in the middle of the day – unless you're heading to a pool. 😂

  13. We stayed in Phra Khanong and it was great. We were about 5 minutes from the metro. I thought the neighborhood was great. Very few tourists but it had easy access to all of the city via the metro. We stayed more than thirty days so we were able to book an apartment.

  14. We've been to Bangkok three times. First two times we stayed close to Sukhumvit, walking distance from a BTS station. This year we stayed in Phra Nakhon, walking distance to lots of sights, markets and delicious local (and inexpensive) places to eat. We walked everywhere, and if it was a bit further we grabbed a tuk tuk. Chinatown was a close ride away. We much preferred where we stayed this year, and never used the BTS. One place we want to see but ran out of time was Talad Noi! It looks amazing! Thank you for sharing 🙂

  15. So glad you found that cool neighborhood. I absolutely loved it. I agree with what you said about Bangkok. It really does matter where you stay. Excellent video thank you.
