This week we’re meeting up with someone you may remember from an earlier episode, Joe Brancaccio of Brancaccio’s Food Shop.
Joe brought us to his local spot, Shelsky’s of Brooklyn, where we ordered the sandwich named after the owner himself: The Peter Shelsky. Think of it as the Jewish version of “The Godfather” sandwich. It’s stacked with fish: Eastern Gaspe Nova, Wild-Alaskan Sable & Pickled Herring. Peter jazzes it up with his unique blend of creamy goodness. Joe’s choice of rye was a perfect match. Salty, creamy, briny & bold. A sandwich that does not hold back.
Joe says he lives like a line cook. He makes his own menu without substitutions. He runs out of meat. He disappoints people. And that’s just how he likes it!
We paired this beauty with Métaireau’s “Carte Noire” Muscadet from the Loire Valley. Muscadet is known for playing perfectly with oysters, but honestly? It’s just as brilliant with a seafood-heavy sandwich like this. Crisp, saline, refreshing — what I now would like to call a “park wine.” It carries the flavors instead of fighting them.
It was one of those afternoons where the sandwich is big, the wine is cold, and the company is gold. Sometimes the best meals happen when someone brings you to their spot.
