In the second of three videos tasting Pinot Noirs from the United States of America, David Allen Master of Wine, Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director tastes Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir 2018 from the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Mount Eden Vineyards is a California producer located in the Santa Cruz Mountains American Viticultural Area (AVA), just south of San Francisco Bay. It specializes in producing wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate was founded by wine-pioneer Martin Ray in 1943, making Mount Eden one of the first boutique producers in California. Located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains, the approximate altitude here of 2000 feet (610m) above sea level creates an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The free draining and infertile shale soil type found here is also well-suited to growing Burgundian varieties.

In the winery, Mount Eden employs natural yeasts during fermentation. and the wines are aged in a combination of new and old French oak barrels before bottling. In addition to the estate vineyard, Mount Eden also owns Domaine Eden, located on a neighboring mountain overlooking Saratoga.
