Just moved into my first apartment and would love some advice on what couch setup to go with.
My living room is pretty small, so I used painter's tape on the floor to mock up a few furniture layouts. The largest outline is a sectional that's about 104" wide, while the smallest marking is roughly 84" wide.
I'm torn between:
• A traditional sofa + an accent chair
• A sectional
Part of me likes the cozy look and extra seating of a sectional, but I'm worried it might overwhelm the space. On the other hand, a sofa and chair setup seems more flexible and visually lighter.
As for style, I keep getting drawn to inspiration photos with olive green couches and red Persian-style rugs. I love the warmth and character they add, but I'm concerned that combination could make the room feel too dark or heavy.
For context, I live in a tropical climate, and my balcony overlooks lots of greenery and water (blurred in the photo for privacy). The walls are plain white, and painting isn't an option.
A few people have suggested going with a beige or light-colored couch to keep things neutral and then bringing in color through rugs, pillows, artwork, plants, etc. I can definitely see the appeal of that approach as well.
What would you do in this space? Sectional or sofa + chair? And what couch/rug colors would you recommend given the view, white walls, and tropical setting?
Thanks in advance—this is my first apartment, so I'm probably overthinking everything.
