In 1940, while German Panzers were crossing the border, the French High Command had one priority: the wine ration. To them, wine wasn’t just a drink; it was a basic human right.

Every French soldier received up to a full liter of wine daily, along with rich pork stews and high-quality pâté on fresh baguettes. Discover how France maintained its culinary pride even in the middle of a massive invasion.

Is 1 liter of wine a day a morale booster or a disaster for a soldier? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Your point? In WWI after Churchill had been kicked out of the British cabinet he took up a commissioned rank of Lieutenant Colonel when serving on the front. Arriving with his own bathtub he didn't eat crackers, he had roast beef, Stilton cheese, fresh fruits prepared by his personal chef and washed it down with Pol Roger Champagne and cognac. The French infantry, inebriated or not, didn't lose the Battle of France in WWII, that was done for them by the French military command and political leadership.
