Hi! First timer here. Our stairs were honestly poor designed and now that we have a moving kid around, we realise how unsafe it is. I know one of the solutions would be to have a handrail but it looks weird in my head. is there anything else I can do other than a handrail?

thanks!

Exorcism for the ghost who lives on your stairs would help.

I think a bannister would look great, wrought iron (or equivalent metal) would be a very classic complement to the brick and stone.

Another solution would be tall potted plants between the stairs and the garage entrance, thin enough not to block car trafic, but that would either stop a kid from running straight off or… catch their fall. Think bamboo, forsythia, willow…

I think you’re really going to have to break down and do a handrail. You can look around and find wrought-iron artists that can make something very beautiful. As you say, it is unsafe, and you’re running the risk that somebody might fall and sue you for their injuries! And of course, your child and you are not very safe going up and down those stairs.

The main issue seems to be the changing length of the stairs – the length of the top one doesn’t matter so much as it’s a landing, so the easiest solution looks to be to add another concrete block to cover the two different coloured blocks in the middle – this should give you essentially 2 steps of the same length.

A wall/bannister/etc can then go on the left.
