We remodeled our 115 year old Midwest home several years ago. We painted everything grey. I want a refresh, but have no idea what color to put with this woodwork. I don’t mind grey, but I know it’s dated. The art is staying (family art) and the woodwork is staying. I like minimal, calm, cozy. Suggestions?

I like the grey, appears somewhat green and compliments the wood….maybe sage green in the stairwell and other areas…..we all do not have to abandon grey when some paint company or designer of the year says grey is “out”
It is a neutral just like beige and tan

  2. Yeah, I don’t totally mind gray here. The second photo made me think it was more blue and I like how it balanced the warm wood. If you want a new color, maybe check out some more true blue options?

Plus there’s a lot of orange wood in this old house. I’ve just cleaned it up, but haven’t sanded/stained anything besides the window sills. Any suggestions on the woodwork….stain, paint, leave it?

Benjamin Moore has a very neutral green called baby turtle I had it in my 110 year old home for years with very similar woodwork throughout and never tired of it.

OP – a refresh with a green with slight gold undertones I think would look really good. You could go deeper in shade than the neutral gray (which isn’t bad but a little “cold” which may be why you’re considering a refresh. Could also do a “warm blue” … your gray is close to the second from left below… I think the outer darker greens or blues would look nice – the green is more “sunny muted” leafy green and the blue muted but more toward the periwinkle…
