Romain Henin is quite a new face on the Champagne map, after working at Henri Giraud and for his father for a few years. He started his own winery in 2016 because of differences in philosophy, wanting to go fully biodynamic/minimum intervention. In 2021, he also took over his father’s holdings. His recent releases have gathered quite a cult following.
I’ve been wanting to try a higher line of his champagne for a while now. When I saw this one on sale for a decent price, I couldn’t let the opportunity go.
This cuvee is a 100% Chardonnay from a 1er cru vineyard in the village of Vertus. Brut Nature: 2gr Residual Tirage: 02/10/2022 Dégorgement: 17/03/2024 Nummer of bottles: 820
Tasting note: Cider like stinky nose, lemon, yeasty, green apple, oxidative note, white flowers, super crisp acidity and very long finish.
It needed half an hour after opening to clear up; after that it kept getting better and better. Cider notes also came back on the palate. On the nose, I was afraid it might be too natural, cider like, but this was definitely not the case. I was very impressed by this wine, a deviation from the usual style of grower champagne I drink. Top notch.
