Had a dinner party tonight with some friends who appreciate wine and opted to open a 1990 Lynch Bages. This was my first from the vineyard and had heard great things so I was excited. Bottom line – this was incredible.
The bottle was a neck fill and showed no signs of concern. Upon opening the capsule, the cork looked great and opened with a Durand easily.
Upon pouring a color sample, it smelled amazing – it was screaming out of the glass in the best way possible. Lots of floral and dried red fruit on the nose, as strong as a first growth. I have always heard that Lynch Bages, although a 5th growth, showcased closer to a first growth, and the aroma did not disappoint. The color was beautiful ruby red.
Poured glasses and let open up for 30 minutes. Upon drinking, lots a fresh bouquet, some stone fruit (plum), and a beautiful finish. We all savored this as long as we could. I have opened first growths with these same friends and we all agreed this was right up there with them. The finish kept us wanting more and we were disappointed when the bottle was gone.
Had this with some Otoro tuna and uni pasta. I’m sure some of you will scoff on the pairing, but it was a great wine to have with anything and I wish we had another bottle to open! I am a believer of this vineyard and will look for other vintages to try!
