Colmar’s Old Town is different from that of Strasbourg: wider streets, smaller squares, and the architecture are more of a mix of the older and later centuries. Its Christmas markets are a mix of food vendors and a mini carnival, and I think we were able to see most of the Christmas markets, however, I did not keep count of how many it offers.
I thought that Strasbourg was already situated close to Germany and Switzerland, but Colmar is even closer still! Well, on this third full day, I had planned to take the train from Strasbourg to Basel (Switzerland), in fact, we had purchased train tickets beforehand. I had planned on a 12 hour day in Basel (I’m not sure if I may have overshot our day there) to explore the city, and be there in the evening for its Christmas market. I had planned to spend a half-day in Colmar on our first day in Alsace, and if it had gone according to plan, I think that the six hours schedule could have been just enough. But, the transportation job strikes made it a challenge to move from one city to another, so this tour day was our plan C.
I am disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of Colmar during the day, because day and night in Alsace, from what I’ve gathered, is such a stark contrast from each other. And I would’ve loved to have joined a walking tour, although, I did not find a free walking tour on my research of Colmar, I would’ve paid for a regular walking tour to learn about the historical tidbits of the town.
