Let’s be honest — some wine names are intimidating. And if you’ve ever stood in a wine shop, stared at a label, and had absolutely no idea how to say what you were looking at, this video is for you.

In this video, I break down four wines that are notoriously hard to pronounce — and trust me, even seasoned wine drinkers get these wrong. I cover Viognier, the rich and aromatic French white that drinks like a more perfumed Chardonnay. Xarel-lo, one of the three traditional grapes behind Spain’s beloved sparkling wine, Cava. Cinsault, the light and fruity French red that most people have been mispronouncing for years. And Mencía, the elegant and underrated Spanish red from northwestern Spain that deserves a lot more attention than it gets.

But this isn’t just about pronunciation — I also give you a quick snapshot of what each wine actually tastes like and why it’s worth adding to your radar.

Because wine should never feel intimidating. And once you know how to say it, you might just fall in love with what’s in the glass.

  1. It's sha-RE-lo and men-SEE-a. The stress is on the second syllable.

And men-THEE-a is how it is said in Spain Spanish, yes, just like the 'th' for the 'c' in 'gracias', etc. but makes more sense for English speakers to say men-SEE-a in the context of speaking English or being outside Spain.

    Cheers from Barcelona 🥂
