French wine and spirits producers say they are “walking on eggshells” as U.S. President Donald Trump announces plans to raise tariffs on nearly all U.S. imports to 15%.

Exporters had briefly celebrated after the US Supreme Court struck down a large portion of earlier tariffs. But relief was short-lived as Trump signaled fresh increases.

The United States remains the largest export market for French wines and spirits, with shipments worth €3.8 billion in 2024. Cognac producer Francois Anthoene and Bordeaux winemaker Francois Janoueix warn that uncertainty is already affecting American buyers, with orders fluctuating amid shifting trade policies.

With up to half of some producers’ exports destined for the US, industry leaders say they are preparing for continued volatility in transatlantic trade.
