Club Gascon, the Michelin-starred French restaurant beside Smithfield Market, is closing at the end of March after 28 years.
Opened in 1998, it once helped make Michelin dining feel modern and exciting for a younger London audience.
This week the Michelin Guide removed its star, not for failure, but because the restaurant is shutting its doors.
With rising costs and changing tastes reshaping London’s dining scene, the owners are considering reopening as a more casual brasserie.
Another long-standing London restaurant closes, and with it a small piece of the city’s fine dining history.

I’m a former restaurateur now writing about food and culture in London. I cover everything from openings to closures, and our local food history. My writing often looks at how what we eat reveals the values of our shared home.
Once a week I publish short pieces blending restaurant reviews with social history and personal experience, exploring how food connects people to place. If that sounds like your kind of thing, you can find all my latest pieces on Substack.
