Living on a boat in Europe doesn’t have to mean mega yachts, millionaire budgets, or hardcore sailing skills.

In this video, we completely flip the script and show you how you can live aboard a canal boat in Europe for around $50,000, with camping-level living costs, no tides, no waves, and skills you can learn in a single day.

This is one of the most underrated cruising lifestyles on the planet — and almost nobody is talking about it.

We’re diving deep into what long-term canal boat living is really like:
🚤 Buying a fully equipped liveaboard canal boat for ~$50k
💰 Running costs that are cheaper than rent
🛶 Free mooring (yes, really — even in places like Paris)
📉 Annual canal licenses that cost less than a weekend marina stay
🧠 Minimal skills required (no sailing experience needed)
🍷 Wine at lunchtime, medieval villages, and fresh bread every day

Canal cruising isn’t about rushing — it’s about slowing down. Picture cruising through vineyards, tying up right in the center of town, walking to the local boulangerie, and accidentally docking in the middle of a village festival… again and again.

We also cover:
• How far you can travel on Europe’s interconnected canal system
• Living aboard year-round (including winters)
• The canal community & lock keepers (éclusiers)
• Why this lifestyle is perfect for beginners
• Why canal boats are cheaper to maintain than seagoing yachts
• The real costs of fuel, food, marinas, and licenses
• Why chartering a canal boat first is a smart move
From the English Channel to the Mediterranean — and all the way through central Europe — this lifestyle lets you live inside the countries you travel through, not just pass by them.
If you’ve ever said:
“I can’t afford cruising.”
“I don’t have the skills.”
“Maybe one day…”
This video might just destroy every one of those excuses.
Kick off your shoes, slow down, and come barefoot with us.
This lifestyle shouldn’t be this cheap and easy… but it is.

  1. OMG I absolutely love this video! I’m glad you both are doing well! I’m so excited for the both of you! MB

  2. Oh wee wee, 😂 u both look dapper in black. So can u lend me $50k Us.😅but i gotta have my tides, waves and dragging anchor, can take the Salty sailor out of the salt, but cant take the salt out of the Sailor xx

  3. 😎 didn't realise you could actually travel as far as Istanbul , thanks both of you .. the only other point of cautioni would add is beware of the Commercial barges the HGVs… Of the inland waterways and of the fact that steel hull boats don't play nicely with GRP ones …a mate hired one on the Norfolk broads and well it didn't slow down like the GRP ones do and already tied up … and opened up a huge hole in the side of a newer GRP gin palace .😂 Fortunately both were hire vessels… 🤦🏻🤦🏻

The other point is in winter like now the waterways can freeze solid…. for days occasionally weeks. .. and sections can be closed for maintenance or following collapses. ..a particular recent UK repeat problem.

  4. I Will sail my 29ft sailboat from Antwerp to the med through the canals this year. Looking forward to it and already considering buying a canal boat for a trip over the donau in a couple of years 🙂.

  5. Really looking forward to the next episodes. I've done a couple of narrow boat/canal boat trips in the UK, many years ago. I'm approaching retirement in a few years & this lifestyle is something I feel I could go for. Shame about Brexit & the issues that caused for UK nationals staying in Europe for more than 180 days 🙄 However, I guess I can cross that bridge if & when it arises 😊

  6. Houseboating around Europe eh….hmmm….I'll ask the Missus…"sure, why not" was her answer. It would be awesome.
I've particularly liked your little village/township tours. Looking forward to the series. Cheers guys

  7. Interesting series, had an experience on the UK canals many years ago for a few weeks, very enjoyable

  8. I lived in Europe/UK for a few years. Awesome sights in a very concentrated format. I can see how canal living could be a fun way to get around and see some amazing places. Thanks for sharing.
