Famous works-Louis Pasteur was a pioneering French chemist, pharmacist and microbiologist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization, the last of which was named after him. His research in chemistry led to remarkable breakthroughs in the understanding of the causes and preventions of diseases, which laid down the foundations of hygiene, public health and much of modern medicine. Pasteur’s works are credited with saving millions of lives through the developments of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern bacteriology and has been honored as the “father of bacteriology” and one of the “father of microbiology” (together with Robert Koch; the latter epithet also attributed to Antonie van Leeuwenhoek).

Pasteurization: Developed the process of heating liquids (milk, wine, beer) to kill bacteria, preventing spoilage.
Germ Theory of Disease: Demonstrated that microorganisms cause fermentation and disease, destroying the theory of “spontaneous generation”.
Vaccine Development: Pioneered methods to weaken (attenuate) microbes, creating vaccines for chicken cholera (1879), anthrax (1881), and rabies (1885).
Molecular Asymmetry: Discovered that crystals can exist in left- and right-handed forms (chirality), a foundational finding in stereochemistry.
Silkworm Disease: Identified the microbial cause of pebrine, saving the French silk industry.
Pasteur’s work laid the foundation for modern immunology and public health, significantly reducing mortality rates from infections.
