  1. Just turned 30 on October 23rd, glad to know I'm gen z instead of millennial. But I have to say most of the people my age are indeed drinking and smoking

  2. So, Catholic rites of forgiveness get a little complex.

Originally, there was no separate sacrament to forgive sins – there was only the forgiveness with Baptism. Which is why many early converts delayed Baptism until the very last, to make sure they got their one-time "get out of jail card" when there was the least time available to commit any new sins. (This actually had a hand to play in the Novatianist heresy.)

Then the idea that a sacrament should be available to reconcile baptized Christians who sinned came about – but, like Baptism, was long held to be a "one time" deal, so people tended to delay Confession & Penance as long as they thought they could.

The Anointing of the Sick (inaccurate called Last Rites by pretty much everyone – heck, part of the deal is that the faithful pray for the recovery of the sick , rather than it being a pregame for the funeral. But part of it is to wipe away any sins the ill person has committed since their last Confession, "just in case".

But it's not really until you get to the Council of Trent that the idea of maximizing reconciliation and stamping out the idea each of these (other than Baptism) were "once in a lifetime" opportunities rather than things the faithful couod and shoild repeat as frequently as necessary.

The period where indulgences were so high were specifically because the modern concept of the almost "revolving door confessional" did not exist . (Note – you're not supposed to treat it as a revolving door; you're supposed to be genuinely contrite and really commit to avoiding those sins in the future, or the confession you just gave isn't complete. But you can keep going back every time you screw up, because it's seem by the Church as more like medicine than a criminal justice system – you don't withhold medicine from someone just because they got sick again later, would you?

  3. Gun guy here. If film sets are using dummy rounds that are visually indistinguishable from the real thing… What the fuck? That's not just stupid, that's advanced stupid. No self respecting armorer (for a film or otherwise) should ever be doing that. Also, don't ever point a gun at someone without even checking if it's clear first, and definitely don't pull the trigger in this situation. You're violating multiple rules of gun safety at that point. So both the armorer and Alec Baldwin are at fault here, and baldwin's the one who pulled the trigger. That's at best manslaughter, but really more like 3rd degree murder, and his ass shouldn't get to walk away from this. If you were the one who did it'd you'd be locked up.

  4. 14:10 I agree with you as pro 2A 100% however I will say you're also assuming that Alec Baldwin is educated enough properly to know the difference between a dummy round AKA a blank or an actual live round you're assuming an awful lot there and so is the law and that's kind of a thornberrys getting at

  5. 25:10 I mean I my son was c section. And if Amber was standing i doubt he would have survived long enough for her to have him. Possibly even her. So I can't disagree with that laying down position

  6. I remember when vaping came about… every mfer in high school that did it… all said the same stupid sh*t…

    “It’S jUsT wAtEr VaPoR!”

  7. Firearm safety is extremely important. You check the chamber every time and never point it at anywhere you dont intend to destroy. 100% this is literally the first thing you learn and i agree with Mattis.

  8. 2:50 "What do you know about Meridian?" —Hell on Wheels, episode 1
Damn Yankees always mocking us southerners when we fight your wars for you, we are the bread basket of your damn Yankee country, and you fill our children's heads with your damn Lincoln worshipping propaganda! THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!

  9. I'm half convinced that the way they've shifted "generations" is a bit BS. When I was little/growing up, they said I was the tail end of Gen X. Now I'm apparently one of the oldest millennials? wtf, I was almost out of high school at the turn of the millennium. If I hadn't already been doing the burnt out gifted kid thing, (ie "applied myself") I would have been OUT of highschool by 2000, and if I hadn't been held back in elementary in the first place because of (undiagnosed autism) lack of social skills, by 01 at the latest. I definitely identify more with Gen X experiences than Millennial ones, and it seems there's a similar experience in 'cuspers' down the board.

  10. On the selling of indulgences… My wife's family are Catholic and twice a year they pay the church to hold a service "dedicated" to their dead family members… apparently several families can all pay for the same day and the only thing that happens is that the names of the families are printed on the pew cards for that service. As a Protestant I have zero understanding on what having a service dedicated to my dead family members is for…especially since its not actually brought up during the service its just like a foot note. Gives me "The Family of the week is the ___ Family" vibes

  11. I just came back from asia and there's lots of whisky in the airports but they have their own wines lile mullberry, apricot, rose, lotus, and different rice wines.

  12. The odd GenX that never drank, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink coffee…

but keep your hands off my Dew 🤦‍♀️🙋‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂

  13. You mentioned the cut in difficult births and when I tell you I winced with the entirety of my being I am not exaggerating in the slightest 😭🤣

  14. 5:59 as a middle of the road gen z i hate vapes , will never try it on my own will

7:31 I think some peoples problem with fume is the company seems to have advertised it as, instead of a less bad habit, a good habit that you should try even if you’ve never smoked or vaped. But that’s just what I’ve heard. Personally I’m fine with how you guys frame it

21:06 good to know if I ever give birth…. Not that that’s very likely

27:30 I mean I think people have used the term Wicca now for other things not just whatever that guy wanted
Of course there are ones who are kind of fakey or something
But there others who genuinely base their practices on what is left behind especially now. I don’t know about specifically Celtic pagans nor do I know about people who use the term Druid but I know about pagans in general and many people aren’t doing it in the way that you’re implying
I think the thing is a lot of these religious are less … they don’t stay the exact same they change and develop from my understanding they’re very fluid unlike a lot of those monotheistic religions
    Especially in modern day

51:40 I don’t think most people are saying anything is absolute

Also isn’t most religion manufactured in some way?
I just feel like it’s a rude generalization to say everyone who uses the term is following what was the origin was and they’re all completely wrong

Religion is an individual belief. Even if someone made it up if someone feels it’s the truth about how they view the world who’s to judge? I don’t think it’s fair to say anything of it as Christians

I usually like your guys takes, I’m not a Wicca personally but I am a pagan of sorts, in the modern definition. Undefined at the moment.
And it’s incredibly disconcerting to hear you claim such absolute things about all wiccans when you are a Catholic historian , not someone who studies modern practices and sociology. Yes they’re connected but it’s different.
I mean you’ve talked about Native American beliefs and been entirely respectful and haven’t made any blanket statements.

Like I know some people in certain circles are just scammers and don’t do research and are disrespectful but the terms are so broad now that it’s nearly impossible to make a statement about them that’s true about all of them. It’s actually very similar to issues you run into with Christian’s and Catholics

57:11 I don’t understand what the difference between something being used in a certain society and it’s being a practice of the society.
Football is a practice of some USA residents , it is also from USA culture. I don’t understand how that proves your point.

What about people who make their own religion to follow by themselves ? Are they awful too? I’m just really disgusted you’re making generalizations when I know for a fact not all people who use the label are the people you’re talking about

  15. 10:00 China is a huge export market for Australian wines, but as a prestige marker the European wines are still the preferred flex (is my understanding). But they're also building their domestic industry at scale and pace.

  16. I would generally agree with Mattis about gun safety, but Thornberry has a valid point about it being a film set.

There are dummy rounds and blanks used in filming that are designed to look like a normal bullet. And Baldwin was an Executive producer. Due to past events actors- even those accustomed to dealing with firearms like Keanu Reeves- aren't allowed to check the firearms. The death of Brandon Lee is a large part of why some of the policies on set differ from best practice off set. And yes if Baldwin was THE producer I would say he had a duty of care, however he was an EXECUTIVE producer and a large part of the reason the jury let him go is because he didn't have any authority over hiring decisions. It would be like saying I'm responsible if Steve falls and hurts himself on set because I have a patreon subscription for the show.

  17. Amazing how you can understand harm reduction when it comes to switching to Foom, but not when it comes to switching to vaping from smoking. Flavor panic is retarded.

  18. Back when I was a teen and Wicca boomed, i fell for each thing you have said here and in the lore lodge video on Samhain. Fact checking was harder in the 90s. 😅

  19. Lack of communication was common even with. Churches that could talk to Rome regularly but slowly. For nearly 300 years acknowledging the Bishop of Rome by name would get him martyred.

  20. 13:57
Mathias: stating the lay gun owner’s argument

Thornberry: stating standard procedure and operating code with firearms on film and theatre sets

Both of them are right and passionate, but in different ways, this is fascinating

  21. I would argue that fume is constantly pushing it as a better habit to replace smoking not to help you quit though I will agree that if you guys are always careful to make that distinction it is much better. Just a thought not sure what I would do so I will take this opportunity to say I love the show thanks for the intelligence injection to the algorithm ❤

  22. When you said Countdown, I thought you meant BBC's Countdown. I was almost excited to hear someone else knows about it. I usually watch the 8 Out Of Ten Cats version with comedians.
