Police fired tear gas on Thursday as a couple thousand people marched in the streets of the western French city of Nantes to denounce what many said was excessive use of force by police in the country’s recent wave of protests.
Riot police fired tear gas to disperse the tense crowd of around 2,000 at the demonstration, which comes after clashes between police and water reservoir protesters in nearby Sainte-Soline.
Two men are in a coma after violent clashes on Saturday (March 25) between protesters and police during an unauthorised demonstration against the construction of a giant water reservoir for farm irrigation in Sainte-Soline.
During the protest, police fired tear gas to repel some protesters who threw fireworks and other projectiles as they crossed fields to approach the fenced-off construction area. At least two police vehicles caught fire, television footage showed.
The government had deployed over 3,000 police for the demonstration.
The government since mid-January has also been facing nationwide protests against its plans to raise the pension age by two years to 64. Protesters have denounced the heavy presence of police, and some have condemned numerous arrests.
A demonstration similar to Thursday’s in Nantes also took place also took place in Paris and was attended by hundreds.
