Dr. John Pemberton was a pharmacist from Atlanta.
In 1865, he fought in the Battle of Columbus.
He sustained a near-fatal saber wound to the chest.
To relieve his pain, he started taking morphine.
Pemberton became addicted.
He decided to create a safer substitute.
He mixed coca leaves, wine, and kola nuts.
He called it Pemberton’s French Wine Coca.
The drink was popular, but in 1886 Atlanta became a dry county.
Pemberton replaced wine with syrup.
His bookkeeper rebranded the drink “Coca-Cola.”
Pemberton accidentally added carbonated water to the mix.
Liking the taste, he marketed it as a refreshing soft drink.
Coca-Cola was first sold to the public on May 8, 1886.
But Pemberton couldn’t break even and went bankrupt.
His morphine habit returned.
He sold the rights to his formula to his business partners.
John Pemberton died in 1888, aged 57.
He left his few shares in the Coca-Cola Company to his son.
But Charles Pemberton, also an addict, died 6 years later.
Coca-Cola sales grew by over 4,000% between 1890 and 1900.
Cocaine was removed from the recipe in the early 1900s.
Today, more than 1 billion Cokes are drunk every day.
