🧅 Every year, I wait for one thing…
The moment onions become so inexpensive that almost nobody knows what to do with them.

Most people buy a few.
I buy a whole bag.
Not because I eat more onions…

But because this is the only time I make one of the most incredible dishes ever created. 🇫🇷✨

It starts with the simplest ingredient in the kitchen. Then, with a little patience, those ordinary onions slowly transform into something unbelievably rich, sweet, and deeply flavorful.

No expensive shortcuts.No fancy ingredients.

Just an old French technique that turns humble onions into a restaurant-quality soup people happily pay $15 or more for. 🤯

By the end of this video, you’ll understand why the best recipes aren’t built around expensive ingredients…

They’re built around knowing exactly what to do with the cheapest ones. 🍲🧅❤️

  1. I prefer sliced Swiss cheese broiled on top of the onion soup, it gives even more flavor. And the part of the cheese slice that melts over the edge and gets crispy…omg, heavenly. 💕

  2. Wonderful classic recipe with a Mozzarella, Soy Sauce, Worcestershire twist! Any cheese will do, some prefer Gruyere, others go with Parmesan. I would have browned the onions with a lid on for the first half of the process – that speeds things up a bit and enhances the time/browning ratio. In a restaurant, we used puffpastry and eggwash to cover the bowls instead of the classic toasted croûton – a real crowd pleaser!

  3. My hubby tasted the best onion soup on a ski trip. He always ordered onion soup at restaurants and was disappointed. Then he got cancer. In a book called cooking with foods that fight cancer, there is research and then recipes. Soy is bad. But onions are good. The recipes were created by chefs. I made the onion soup. He cried. This was the soup he had been waiting for. After he died, I contacted the hospital that had cared for him and volunteered to make the soup. I had 20 kilo of onions to peel and slice. The cooks helped me. I sorted that pot using butter I had brought because those kitchens don’t use butter. It was ready just in time for lunch. The cooks tasted it first. They wanted the recipe, I gave it to them. It went up to the cancer ward. Every bed wanted the French onion soup. Even the guy with the feeding tube. Not one complaint. And everyone felt better that afternoon.

  4. Thankyou for the recipe Chef Alexander. It is great to see proper parallelization of onions as most videos do not followe this process. Your recipe is a little different from the French version but having made this myself I do believe it needssome cognac. I cannot give you enough likes when the chef cooks. These are the best episodes.

  5. Merci pour vos suggestions culinaires. Par contre, la mozzarella dans cette recette n’apporte rien de plus (à mon avis).
    Bon appétit.

  6. Don't need to stir the onions, just have it on low enough heat to avoid burning, can use slow cooker if have one. Make the broth after without cleaning, then can use the residue in the cooker for the broth.

  7. What a lovely recipe making your own stock! I like some cognac or half red-half white wine and no soy and mix Gruyere and mozarella. French onion soup made properly is wonderful and, yes, carmelized do take time but are fully worth the time it takes for the onions to do their work.
