Grape phylloxera, an aphid accidentally imported from North America, devastated European vineyards from the 1860s onward and destroyed a huge share of France’s vines. The only durable fix was grafting European vinifera vines onto phylloxera-tolerant American rootstock, and roughly 85% of the world’s vineyards still use that method today. There is still no cure for the insect itself.
