First time poster long time lurker. Super proud of my two basement window well builds for my cats.
Supplies:
Home depot run:
Shortest roll of black liner
6 bags of the beach white rocks
2 packets of cat grass seeds
2 pots containers with potting soil
Cat friendly plants
Extra backyard pavers
Amazon buy:
Astroturf 3.3ft x 5 ft from pet grow
Legos for Dwarven house, Links, and Shrek dudes
Screen door replacement – to block the well top from mosquitos coming in
Overall build:
I used an opened up cardboard box of a TV to measure and cut out the shape of the window well so I could get the right sizing of the screen, black liner, and astro turf flooring
The attachment of the screen was annoying, but I tucked it under and used duct tape. Seems to be working temporarily.
Couldn't get the exact size for the lining so it's patched with some overlap to let the water not flood.
The astroturf was cut to fill one well and the outside scraps were used to fill the other window well. Honestly the slabs and stones do great work covering the rest, so I didn't need to buy two pieces.
Cat grass was surprisingly easy to grow. One of my cat friendly plants died after a week, but the other seems to be healthy.
Cats love the slabs to do their back rubs. They love eating the cat grass.
Fairy door was fun to add, but fairy sculptures were so expensive that I figured lego was easier and more fun to build.
The choice of outdoor legos was after seeing it needed some character. The Dwarven home will probably get pretty beat up, but it doesn't rain much here so we'll see what happens. Worst case is I submerge it in some soap to clean quarterly.
Happy to answer questions!
Under $600 for all the random materials and built it within a month.
