For me, the best part of a French onion soup 🥣 has always been the toasted bread soaked in soup with melted cheese 🧀 on top….so I just made that the whole dish. 😋
I still had to take my time to gently caramelise a bunch of onions 🧅 until they’re nicely browned and jammy, but the payoff is SO worth it! It’s a french onion soup, but as a snack!
Here’s what you’ll need to make this:
4 white onions
15ml (1 tbsp) fish sauce
10ml (2 tsp) Worcestershire sauce
15ml (1 tbsp) cooking wine
1 bay leaf
1 pinch of salt
2g (1 tsp) black pepper
120ml (½ cup) beef/chicken stock
8 slices of bread
4 slices of Emmental cheese
1 egg
Baking details:
180°C for 5 minutes without onions, then another 6-8 minutes with onions
