Six wines, blind. One white, five reds, every one of them from the same country — and the only job was to work out where.

We make wine for a living, so reading a glass back to its home turf should be the easy part. It was not. Three of us committed to three different countries. Three of us were wrong.

Somewhere in this lineup is the most expensive bottle of the day. It’s also the one nobody at the table could finish. The cheapest pours went the other way entirely.

Pick the country before we do, watch a room full of supposed professionals talk themselves into the wrong hemisphere, and find out whether the dear bottle or the cheap one was worth the money.
No labels, no mercy. This is Bottle Shock.

  1. The only wines I like from the Rhone are from Cote Rotie. They at least keep the alcohol around 13% for their Syrahs and don't use too much oak

  2. As someone who is a wine hobbyist in Europe, South Africa is literally the best value wines across the board that money can buy. I don't buy a great deal of Aussie wines because every time I do I just think I can get that cheaper and better from South Africa. You clearly don't have very good options in Australia for certain regions. Thank you for highlighting some great Aussie wines though as I will agree that they are getting better.

  3. It's kinda weird Noah points a couple of wines in the lineup as being probably Gamay and ends up thinking Argentina as the country when here in Argentina we have zero Gamay wines currently on the market (last experiment was from Weinert in 2018 and it was quickly discontinued). We do have Rhone valley-esque wines with GSM or Mourvedre, though.

    Great video as usual, cheers!

  4. I’m really surprised by the Graillot wine. In the States this retails for 35-50 bucks, and usually they’re pretty fresh. I don’t recall if I had the ‘22. Can bottle variability or shipping/storage issues cause Brett to manifest?

  5. Bummer with the Graillot Crozes. He is considered one of the very best producers in the region. I have tasted his crozes basic cuvée (the same as yours) in a bunch of different vintages and it’s always shone…

  6. What a shame about the Graillot. It's a fantastic wine in most vintages, although 2022 was way too hot in Rhône (and most of Europe), which I'm guessing may have something to do with the performance this time.

Edit: Yes, it's always hot and dry in Rhône, but 2022 was extreme.

  7. I’m a huge fan of white Rhône wines. Both northern and southern. Great video and as someone very sensitive to bret, I’m always a bit worried when I buy reds from Rhône. Thank you.

  8. Like others have commented such a shame about the Graillot. You clearly had a faulty bottle. Funny that Brendan was the only one to call it that.
I've had the -21 vintage few times and it's been a really nice wine. A hint of VA for sure, but only the amount to make it more interesting.
Last time I had it hidden in blind tasting line up with other Syrah/Shiraz wines and it was preferred over the Kalleske offerings I also had in there.

Have to agree about CndP. They really ought to do something differently. They can't just keep doing things like they used to. That's for sure. Wines are becoming unbalanced (or they already are) and just out right unpleasant. Shame as well since some of the most amzing bottles I've had were old vintages of Beaucastel.

  9. Another banger…but I'd say you need to get access to some better SA wines if you think there isn't power in that counties wines. There are some absolute stunners from there…maybe try get some Syrah from the Swartland or the reds from Raats or Meerlust. Thanks for another great one!

  10. And Rhône to me is one of the most exciting wine regions to explore. Starting with Côte Rotie and working my way south only to en up north again and starting over. Fascinating places.

  11. Today on Bottle Shock we question if someone has polluted our Syrah with Grenache. (Why do I often feel like a blend, red or white, makes it more difficult for me to name the area of the globe that the wine came from? Mull this over as long as you like.)

  12. Hilarous episode fellas, loved it! Shout out Damo, and to Brendan for mad amount of replies he sends in the comments in each vid! Also, you boys need to get some more Hemel-en-aarde pinots / chardonnay's on I reckon. Trying to remember the last time i saw one on the channel (though I might have missed it). Cheers from the UK!
