In this episode, we review the award-winning 2018 Terra Madre Plavac Mali Premium, a serious yet highly affordable red wine from Croatia’s youngest vineyard appellation, the Komarna wine region. Cultivated in limestone-rich soil by the boutique, ecological winery Vina Terra Madre (part of the Poljopromet portfolio), this organic premium blend features 85% Plavac Mali, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Syrah, and was aged for 12 months in French oak. It boasts a deep red hue and an expressive bouquet of dark berry jam, dried figs, Mediterranean herbs, and dark chocolate, leading into a full-bodied, velvety palate with well-integrated tannins, a juicy balance despite its 14.5% alcohol content, and a long, elegant finish. Earning a stellar 5/5 rating from both of us, this critically acclaimed vintage—which won a silver medal (93 points) at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards and a bronze at the 2025 International Wine Challenge—is still drinking beautifully in 2026 for just €17 (around $19.50 USD).
