I absolutely despise these kind of windows but they’re the most common where I live and the best apartment I could find for the moment has them. I have them open almost all the time to get sunshine and air, but I think I need to put on some screens to prevent bugs (especially in a tropical environment) I fear the screens would make the visibility and sunlight even less. On the other hand I honestly have no idea how to make them look nice. What kind of curtains would look best? Any advice?

Those jalousie windows can be tricky but you have some options. For screens, the mesh ones are pretty thin these days so they won’t block much light – definitely worth it in tropical climate. Maybe try some light colored curtain panels hung wide from the wall instead of right at window frame, it will make whole area look bigger and less choppy. You could also paint the window frame in darker color to make it blend better with wall.

Maybe hang some lightweight voile curtains…will still let light in and help prevent bugs flying in

I don’t know WTF those kind of shades are. But if I couldn’t rip that out I’d open them up and leave them open, and put up curtains again which it looks like was done countless times before. But a modern curtain mounting way, like 6-8″ above rod and 5-6″ extending beyond each side. Use sheers in the middle or something because those shut looks criminal lol
