Please help me figure out what items I need to buy for these shelves – 1) family room, right side of the fireplace 2) dining room/hallway built-in

Books.
I think you should put meaningful things you love. Not just junk to put junk. Books, family photos etc. You can mix in some home goods stuff but I’d start with what you have and build on it
Books for family room – go to a Goodwill for nice bound books and the dining room hutch looks nice.
