Ever wondered why this French WW1 soldier is carrying what looks like a giant pot on his backpack?
In World War 1, the French Army had a unique cooking system. Instead of cooking by the platoon, they cooked by squad. All cooking equipment was distributed among soldiers – pots, pans, buckets, and even a collapsible coffee stove!
Two soldiers from each squad would cook 400-800 meters behind the front lines. Daily rations included 750g of bread, meat, wine, and even tobacco!
That mysterious “pot”? It’s actually a portable coffee stove! ☕
