During my recent trip to Bordeaux I visited an estate I previously didn’t know very much about, Chateau Coutet, a Saint Emilion Grand Cru with vineyards on the chalk hillsides near Chateau Angelus. The estate has a real sense of its family-owned heritage and an approach as custodians of their land which is seen in the organic approaches they adopt.
The estate here,It’s been in the, the hands of the same family, the David Beaulieu family for over 400 years now.
A fantastic site, the, soils here are predominantly limestone on the plateau at the top with a clay slope, and then more sandy soils below. There are 12 hectares of vines and they’re roughly in three similar sized portions, and these are combined
Another point about the estate here is that they have a very old selection of vines. So not only are the vines themselves old, there’s an average vine age here of, I believe, about 50 years going into this particular wine. But also they’re using massale selection, so generation after generation have been selecting and refining the same stock. A reflection of this is the fact that when they’re talking about their Cabernet Franc, they actually use its old traditional name, Bouchet. and they also using a very old selection of Merlot.
So there’s a wonderful long history at the estate here.
The estate is entirely farmed organically, initially simply because that was the way they’d always run things, they had never felt the need to purchase agrichemicals. Today the estate has organic certification, which they earned in 2012, this is granted by Qualisud, who are one of the certification bodies here in France.

What a mesmerizing blending of history and present. Such a fresh drop of Bouchet out of massalic selection.
