Just moved into a new place and I'm trying to fit our previous furniture into this living room and see what needs purchasing/changing to make it look better. My main concerns are:
- There is a spacious alcove on the side (175x90cm) that I would like to use for a desk + 3D printer setup. For that I've just bought 2 IKEA alex units (in black-blue) and plan on getting a worktop to match the ash wood of the furniture. I haven't bought any curtains or blinds yet but I was thinking to try match the colour of the drawers to the curtains so they don't look out of place, but I feel like dark blue blinds on the windows behind the sofa might look odd. Would blue curtains for the patio doors and white blinds for the windows look better? The main colours of the room so far are white and beige so it could use a splash of colour somewhere.
- The tall white bookcase between the desk and sofa has glass doors so I was planning on using it as a display case for LEGOs and books, but it's the only white piece of furniture in the room so far (save for the bookcases next to the TV that have alternating white/beige shelves). I am considering also replacing our coffee table, which could also be white if it helps.
- The coffee table takes up a lot of space, there's not enough free room to manoeuvre to the patio doors. Also, as the sofa is a recliner, we have to move it quite often to have room to recline. The main use of the table is for when we eat and watch TV, we even wanted to replace it with a lift-up coffee table at some point but I am trying to find some solution to it. I'm considering getting a table that's wide enough for two to eat on but on wheels so that it could be stored between the sofa and white bookcase when not in use (doubles up as a side table). Not sure how that would suit the room though.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Side note: I am renting so I'm avoiding painting walls or investing in new furniture.
