Napoleon III was preparing the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris — a world’s fair to showcase the best of France. He asked the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce to exhibit their finest wines.
They handed it to the Syndicat des Courtiers — wine brokers who already knew the market. Two weeks later, done.
No years of deliberation. They wrote down what everybody already knew.
The ranking was based on trading prices from 1815 to 1855. A 40-year average. Wines that sold for the most got ranked the highest.
It wasn’t a taste test. It was a price list.
