At Great Wines of the World in San Francisco on March 8, I hosted a rare vertical of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. cabernet sauvignon, including the historic 1973 that won the red wine tasting in Paris. It was a reminder of how Napa Valley earned its place among the world’s great wine regions.
The Judgment of Paris was a blind tasting held in Paris on May 24, 1976, organized by the late Steven Spurrier and Patricia Gallagher, that pitted top French Bordeaux and Burgundy against California cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. When French judges ranked Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon as the top red and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay as the top white, it helped change the world’s perception of California wine.
