Hello, dear friends — Please join me today as I share some personal memories of Julia Child, and then cook a three-course dinner from one of her popular books. I hope you enjoy this episode!

The recipes I used are from “The Way To Cook” by Julia Child (Knopf, 1989). If you are unable to obtain this culinary treasure from a bookstore or public library, you can find adaptations of the recipes online:

  1. I have never watched Julia but these recipes look delicious. What a moment it must have been when you met her😊

  2. I have always loved your music and you’re cooking. I now have even more respect for you as a serious chef. I know your dinner party was lovely such a joy. Thank you so much for sharing.

  3. Kevin, This was wonderful, thank you. FYI, Did you know that if you mix silver flatware with stainless steel flatware in the dishwasher at the same time, it will leave an awful white powder on the silver flatware and it will become dull and lacklustre . It can be polished out but you should avoid it happening in first place !!! Just a warning!

  4. I loved watching this episode SO MUCH…..I have always been a huge Julia Child fan and really like cooking from her books….it is like having her in the kitchen with me. You have been really blessed to have met her in person! Wow!

  5. I hope I'm not being too pushy with this, but may I offer a suggestion? I've made this and bouef bourguignon throughout my life. I've always cooked it in the oven then let it sit overnight to develop the flavors. When you are ready to serve:
Take out the beef and set aside.
Pour the juices and vegetables into a fine colander (or a china hat) over the dutch oven to drain out the cooking liquid, then mash the remaining vegetables through the sieve into the broth.
A china hat is amazing for this because the cooking liquid becomes velvety.
Toss the vegetable remains and return the dutch oven back onto the stove. Stir in the beurre blanc until it thickens.
    Adjust seasonings.
    Add back in the beef.
There should be no vegetables in with the beef which is traditionally how the French serve these dishes. You can then transfer into your lovely copper pot as a serving vessel to keep warm.
Either way, the more American version with the vegetables in or the French version, vegetables out this is a knockout dish!
With the French version, I always do sides of carrots au beurre, caramelized pearl onions, mushrooms in butter and boiled, parsley potatoes then serve with a leafy green salad and crispy bread.
    Lovely episode!
    The tarte tatin is amazing.
    As always, your devoted fan.

  6. Julia Child would love that little spill. Thank goodness you still had plenty for the sauce❤ I still have my signed hardback copy of that book. She could sign her name faster than any human I’ve ever seen. ✒️ we were told she would sign multiple items but nothing personalized. She made that line move😂. Thank you for another wonderful dinner party.❤

  7. I am glad I am not the only one who drops things. Shows you are human. Becky, on Acre Homestead, dropped a container like yours in the soup. Only difference, hers splashed everywhere 😂❤

  8. Thank you so much again for sharing the delightful preparations for the Julia Child dinner and also sharing your memories of Julia Child how fortunate for you. 🥘⏲️❤

  9. Kevin I grew up watching Julia with my mother after school. You can see a lot of those episodes here in YT if you are interested, they're so fun and nostalgic. My sister went to a Julia book signing too, probably the same book tour you attended because Jacques Pepin was at the one she attended too. Hers was in California. I have a picture of my sis with Jacques and the joy on her face was palpable. She told me she BURST into tears when it was her turn to meet Julia she was so overcome.

  10. I have commented before on how much I love to entertain. I notice that most of your dinner parties are for four people.. I usually entertain with 8-10 and am wondering if you feel doubling your recipes will work well? Or, do you have suggestions for larger dinner parties? Some recipes double nicely and…….some don't. Love your relaxed style and kindness, the world needs more Kevin's!!

  11. Hi Kevin..Lizette. and Mr.Fox n all of the followers of this great platform..i made colcannon yesterday..love it..have made onion soup before n i like it ..will have to make again..lasagna. tonight..thank you for such lovely shows ..i so enjoy!!

  12. I love your authenticity. No Turkish bay leaves, no problem, we’ll just leave them out. Oops, canister slipped – hasn’t it happened to us all. No wonder we feel so close to you. You are much more like a good friend than an influencer. Thank you for sharing.

  13. Julia AND Jacques are my heroes! So envious you were able to see them and meet her! She must have seen you were a kindred spirit! I love to watch the French Chef still to this day and I also watch all of Jacques' shows. Those two – Such wonderful people! And now the cooking world has Kevin Lee Jacobs!

  14. You know Kevin, a lot of the gadgets I have in my kitchen are from watching your videos, the ground meat breakuper, the thin tongs, the apple peeler and I’m sure others. I’ve learnt a lot about different things from your show!……

  15. Bon appetit! I watched a few of her shows. Your table setting was beautiful and everything looked delicious.

  16. It certainly all looked delicious. Julia Child was not on television here in Australia, as far as I know. I only encountered her videos later in life on YouTube when the Meryl Streep film came out, though I had heard of her by reputation. She was a remarkable personality! Thank you for the video!

  17. I loved watching the Julia Child programs, which are now shown on PBS. I cracked up when you dropped the container of beef stock in the pot. I imagine Julia smiling down as she made countless flubs during her program, showing us she was a human being besides being a master chef.

  18. So cool you met Julia Childs! I love the Blue Italian dinnerware. I have a few pieces and it always makes me smile when I get to use them 🙂 Happy early St. Patrick's Day! This will be my 10-year wedding anniversary 🙂

  19. Your menu was very French and so elegant, thank you so much for sharing your time and love of cooking with us ….🇫🇷 👨‍🍳 💐🥐

  20. Awwww I feel so bad you lost your Turkish bay leaves!!! you were so happy to find those!!😞😞 That food looks and smells divine from here!!!

  21. Another beautiful meal. Enjoy watching all of your videos. Do you have a link for the large serving spoon?

  22. Kevin, you are a wonderful distraction to everything going on in our world right now… you have brought back old world charm along with entertaining back into the homes of all your viewers.. something I remember my mother used to do when I was a child. You’ve outdone ourself in this one for sure! I look forward to each and every one of your videos!

  23. Julia Child AND Jacques Pepin?! I’m jealous. But I have been to the restaurant in Rouen where Julia Child decided she wanted to be a French chef.

  24. Good evening, Kevin. What a sweet story of your meeting with Julia Child. I remember watching The French Chef with my grandmother, then Julia Child and Company, and later a series with Jacques Pepin. What talented chefs. I think Julia would have been touched with you making one of her classic recipes. Bon appetit!

  25. Watched the episode with my mom today. She wants to know how you keep your broccoli warm m for your dinner party. It gets cold so quickly.

  26. I love the Julia inspired stew and St. Patrick potato’s and beef stew too. I watch your every episode and I think your cooking looks easy and is the best. The table set up perfectly.
Can you treat us to your piano playing every time you practice? If possible can you and Victoria do dueling pianos, maybe?

  27. Thank you Kevin for sharing the Julia story. I’ve always loved her but for some reason I don’t have that cookbook . Ordering it tonight to Mae that stew.

You bring such pleasure to us. I loved seeing your stew liquid fly out onto the island. Today after my husband finished cleaning the kitchen I managed to spill an entire container of salad mix all over the floor-it flew out of my hands and all over the kitchen . So I guess I’m not the only one that spills and drops.
