Everyone’s telling me it’s a crime to get rid of the red brick.. I just think I hate it though, especially with just partial brick . I know paint on brick is bad but a white lime wash and painting the wood siding white just looks so clean to me . GPT photos attached . Be honest, internet!

I like the red brick, but the panelling might be nice in white. Will need regular cleaning and maintenance though to get that crisp white effect. Otherwise it will look a bit tired.

If paint on brick were easy to undo, you’d probably get some leeway – but it cannot really be undone.

That being said, why buy a house with brick and just to paint it – why buy it in the first place if you are just going to change everything?

Brick is cool AF. I would exhaust trying to get the most from how it is rather than painting it blandly.

Like yes, but if you prefer it… and you plan on staying in that house (!!) you should go for it and fuck what anyone else thinks.

  4. The real reason it’s foolish to paint brick isn’t about aesthetics, but maintenance. Your brick facade is essentially a maintenance free surface. As soon as you paint it, you have maintenance issues. You now have to remove and repaint at intervals as it starts flaking off. You’re making it forevermore a surface that requires periodic work and money.

It looks better, and updated the entire home, though the example looks more like the brick is fully painted, not just a wash applied.

Criminal. I bet it would look good getting rid of the peachy paint on the rest though.

Maybe try a few colors on the siding that aren’t white while keeping the brick? The all white trend is already overdone.

You might just be liking the change lighting and door fixtures. That alone would dramatically change your house without going offending or making a possibly pita change of painting brick.

This sub had loads of these home with sages and blues awhile ago and one of those colors fits the house era, and keeps it neutral so the nature is the star instead of an unnatural white space. Please keep the shutters in an accent color (even if they are slap on aesthetics, it gives it charm).

Paint just the top part white. The paneling. Leave the brick alone trust us, maintenance is not worth it

I’ve had success staining brick in the past. I actually went in the opposite direction and stained it red to get more contrast but you could use a stain to give it more of a white wash effect.

Straight to jail. White houses also get dirtier faster plus all the maintenance issues mentioned.

If you must just paint the siding white.

I would play around with painting the siding. shutters, and trim, leaving the brick alone. I could see blues or greens playing nicely with the red brick.

  13. Like others have said, start by painting the rest of the house white, and leave the red bricks. Maybe then add the black shutters. Red brick, white paint and black shutters is a classic look. See how you like that before you move on to so something you cannot change back.

Your issue is maintaining the painted brick and it can degrade over time. Over and above any asthetic.

I more than agree a paint color change of the siding would make a WORLD of difference though. Plus removing the shutters.

Find a color that flows with the brick and you’ll have a winner!

I think it looks great white. But maybe you could leave the brick and just white wash it and do the paneling white. Depending on why you’re hesitant to fully paint it.

While the current colors look dated and don’t play off the brick to let it shine, it’s still warm and inviting. The white looks cold and soulless.

Do an internet search for “colors that look good with red brick” and you’ll find a lot of great suggestions and advice. It’s a common issue, so there are a lot of articles and blog posts out there. Looking at pics of what others have done might make you appreciate the versatility and warmth of the brick. You can make this house look great – updated, charming, cozy, and inviting without touching the brick.

I’m the minority here and I love painted brick. Grew up in a home with painted brick like this, no issues. It’s been 30 years. But the real crime here is no shutters! Definitely black shutters like last photo

Keep the brick, and paint it another color that you think compliments it.

Love the white. Would do dark green shutters
