Is French wine always the best? Or can you actually get better value in Napa Valley? In this episode, Certified Sommelier John Alanis puts the “French is best” cliché to the ultimate test. We aren’t just doing a “sniff and spit” review—we are performing a Whole Bottle Review to see how these wines evolve from the first sip to the final glass.
We’re pitting two legendary producers against each other in a battle of the Cabernet blends:
The Napa Contender: Chappellet Mountain Cuvée ($40) – A high-altitude, fruit-forward powerhouse from Pritchard Hill.
The Bordeaux Challenger: Chateau Kirwan Margaux 2019 ($69) – A historic Third Growth estate visited by Thomas Jefferson, featuring the “lost” grape of Bordeaux: Carmenere.
📍 Inside This Episode:
Initial Sip & Swallow Score: My immediate reactions to the fruit profiles and structure.
The Story of the Estates: Why Chappellet uses mountain fruit and how Chateau Kirwan is using modern gravity-flow technology to revolutionize their Margaux style.
Nostradamus Prediction: Which wine will evolve, and which will stay the same?
The Whole Bottle Experience: Discover which bottle takes you on an emotional journey and which one is just “boring.”
Whether you love the plush, berry-driven style of a Napa Cab or the earthy, tobacco-laced complexity of a Bordeaux blend, this deep dive will help you decide where to spend your wine budget for the best value.

Thanks for the video. Ch Kirwan looks like something I'll have to try. Requesting a white Rhone face-off as a possible video? Just had a Saxum white and a Chave Selection Hermitage blanc and I was blown away by both.
The Mountain Cuvée is so solid. Still waiting to try the Pritchard Hill. Great video as always. My cellar is 80% Bordeaux. I find most Napa wines show way too much oak and alcohol for my taste
H John, I love your videos. But please make an effort to pronounce the names of vineyards properly.
