We just purchased our first home! Any idea on how to make the stove area look a bit nicer? We wanna add a back splash and possibly put the fridge beside it thanks

You need an exhaust fan for the gas stove/oven. Yikes! That looks like an old stove-pipe connection up on the wall. Move the range under that and maybe the exhaust fan can be attached to that somehow for venting? r/DIYHome might be able to help with that sort of project.
As for decorating, your backsplash should coordinate with the countertop and cabinets.
I would put countertops on both sides of the stove so you have a place to set down hot pots and bakeware, etc.
