I want to do something about this tile and need ideas.

This is a 3 year old picture, but was the best I had of the situation. I HATE this tile and we're finally in the spot where we can tackle a few projects in this room. These are 12×12 tile to give a sense on scale here. To keep this a weekendish project, I am thinking I'll just tile over the existing tile. I don't want to deal with changing our or painting the mantle. I just have no idea where to start looking or what to look for that won't look dated in 5 years.
