Australia is famous for big, bold Shiraz—but does that mean we actually make the best? Today we’re putting our national pride on the line with a blind tasting showdown: three Australian Shiraz versus three international Syrah.

If we don’t come out on top, we’ve basically invented a sport we’re not very good at (looking at you, England and cricket).

What we’re tasting:
Six wines ranging from $75 to $265, including producers from Australia, France, California, and a surprise contender. We’re going in completely blind to see if we can tell the difference between Shiraz and Syrah, and more importantly—which style we actually prefer.

Spoiler alert: The results surprised us. Henry’s favorite wine? He was convinced it was French. The most expensive bottle? Opinions were divided. And that textbook Aussie Shiraz everyone expects? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out.

The Verdict: Do Australians actually prefer Australian Shiraz, or have we been lying to ourselves this whole time? The answer might surprise you.

Drop a comment: Are you Team Shiraz or Team Syrah? And if you could only drink one style for the rest of your life, which would it be?

  1. Have 6 bottles of Arnot-Roberts in the cellar – hard to keep them in stock as have had 7 bottles in the last 6 months

  2. Given how much I love this, I did miss hearing Brendan and Noah's opinions pre-meeting. Always a great video nonetheless.

  3. Not enough frenchies – please redo seriously! Or go closer – Clonakilla vs. Cote Rotie, Heathcote vs Hermitage, Elderton Command vs Ruby Port (woops!)?

  4. I can always taste the Viognier in young cote-rotie and I'm always disappointed no matter the maker… Cornas has so much more value and pleasure in the glass. Super cool lineup as always!

  5. I am a big fan of Aussie Shiraz. I started with the Barossa and then watched my preference migrate slowly to the McLaren Vale. So I guess I evolved.

  6. Fun tasting—love Syrah/Shiraz, though almost always at a lower price point than these. Side note: just found out I passed my WSET Level 3 with distinction, thanks again for demystifying Aussie regions and wines and making me laugh at the same time!

  7. that arnot roberts is a sick wine, 85 bucks if u buy direct. the vineyard is right at the edge of where syrah can get ripe enough in cali, one of the coldest parts of the state

  8. I call it under spill
And its f delicious and always was and always be ….Stains concrete tho

  9. "Americans have automatic…." LOL omg so good. I absolutely adore Arnot, I normally stay away from California but they seem to hit at a decent prize point every time.
