Kyoto, my hometown, is a city I absolutely love. But lately, it has been overrun by tourists, and nowhere is this more obvious than Higashiyama—especially around Kiyomizu Temple. With the crowds, can you actually find great coffee here? From global brands to hidden gems, this is a real look at what Kyoto’s busiest area has to offer for coffee lovers.

  1. The last time I visited Higashiyama was pre-covid, and it was insanely busy then, I hate to think what it's like now. Did have an enjoyable (but not mind-blowing) coffee at %Arabica, but have been disappointed by their Tokyo cafes. Heading back to Japan in late May, with a few days in Kyoto, do you have any recommendations on the south side of the city? We've got tickets to visit the Nintendo Museum, I'm assuming matcha is more the thing to seek around Uji.

  2. I was here back in autumn of 2019 and it was quite busy but nothing like what it's like in this video. Looked like sardines in a can! Love the content!

  3. I went to Nittodo Cafe in 2019. It was a cool experience to escape the crowd upstairs. Can’t remember the quality of the coffee, but it was a good space.
