Taurasi and Aglianico del Vulture are two wines that have been dubbed the ‘Barolo of the South’. They are based on the grape Aglianico, which is high in tannins and acidity. Does this comparison hold up? Learn more in this blind tasting.

i recently had a 50 euro Barolo…which was refined and had good tannins and oak…. wasnt balanced with 14.5 abv though…..the problem was it was as light as you can imagine! …Nebbiolo…shouldnt taste in texture like a light valpolicella
Great video! It's sad that you loose viewers over the tasting because that's the part I'm interested in. It seems to help to judge if our palets or preferred wine styles match and also helps to train my own palate. Do you have extended videos or something in your paid channel/patreon? Because, sometimes I get the same bottle, probably a different vintage though, and compare tasting notes with you, Konstantin Baum, Agnese from No Sediment or Peter Koff and Patrick Farrell.
A couple of years ago I came across Elena Fucci Titolo Aglianico- I was blown away since tannins were softening. Beautiful
we went to a top notch italian restaraunt last night in miami with an extensive wine list and not one taurasi on the menu. This wine is not readily availiable in S fl.
Thank you for putting Taurasi on the map ❤
Wahoooo Aglianico mentioned <3 Great video
Matt, I love these wines but I have to ask you this question: Don't you think this is becoming too expensive? Some of this alcoholic fruit juice is costing the same as well aged whisky which costs a lot more to produce. Seriously, I think this is just being marketed to people with more money than sense and well off foreigners. WT
The difference in my, unpopular but steadfast opinion, is that aglianico tends to produce wines with bodies that harmonize well with their tannins and acidity, where as Nebbiolo, all to often, thrills me on the nose and annoys me in the mouth, as the wines often don’t have the structure to support the tannin and acidity. I know I know, I’m wrong because Nebbiolo is sacrosanct. Except that I’m not. 😉 Taurasi (and del vulture) everyday
Great pronunciation . Bravo ! Nice analysis. The wines of the “Mezzogiorno “ are underrated. Good that you are featuring these wines.
Outstanding as always Matthew and thank you for putting yet another varietal on my "must try"
list. I have not tried any Taurasi but I searched my local shop online and now have at least 2 bottles to go buy and try. Thank you again and keep up the great work. Cheers…🍷
I will look for this, but I have not tried it yet. Borolo yes 👍
Another great video. Also love Greco di Tufo from that region. Keep up the good work Matthew.
I am from Campania, there are also a lot of great producers outside the DOCG areas who make outstanding wines, Campania is a great territory that in my opinion will gain more and more recognition internationally overall because has great potential and a long tradition of very smart and innovative winemakers, hope you will visit us soon again, we will be happy to welcome you!
Sounds worth exploring, thanks for the tasting. One suggestion, something I see/hear quickly mentioned in a lot of wine reviews but not really detailed in their notes…VA. You mentioned one of the older wines had VA. Was it like vinegar? nail polish remover? sulphur or rotten eggs? which version we talking about? I can't really stand nail polish version. I've tasted some with a little balsamic and I still liked it but the other tasters in my group didn't. Other times I get the nail polish and nobody else notices it. Thanks again for the video.
I know longer videos are a pain for you but I love them. It shows us a wide variety of producers and how some wines can tast different tho they have the same grapes, region or Color. Ty!!
Super interesting! Never tried a Taurasi before, only Aglianico Vulture. Would like to find a good one some day so this is a great guide!
Great video. It’s very sad but as an Italian restaurant manager in Charleston, SC there are currently no Taurasi available in our market.
I visited Feudi, Cavaliere Pepe from this list, but also Donnachiara, Benito Ferrara, Terredora di Paolo and Antonio Caggiano. Great wines all over. I also enjoyed the whites from Cavalier Pepe very much, but also from Benito Ferrara.
No man! The Filadoro label could have been designed by Peter Saville. Iconic
I prefer the Aglianico grape to the Nebbiolo, especially in the sub-fifty-dollar price point.
