Gourmet Croque-Monsieur
Ingredients:
4 slices of thick-cut white bread (sourdough works well)
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk (warmed)
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
4 slices of ham (preferably French-style ham)
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Sautéed mushrooms (optional, for extra flavor)
Instructions:
Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour, stirring constantly, to create a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes without browning.
Gradually whisk in the warm milk, stirring until the sauce thickens and is smooth. Add a pinch of pepper.
Remove the pan from heat and stir in half of the shredded Gruyère cheese until melted. Set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly toast the bread slices.
Spread Dijon mustard on two of the toasted bread slices.
Layer ham on top, followed by a spoonful of the béchamel sauce.
Top with the remaining Gruyère cheese and the second piece of bread.
Grill the Sandwich:
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
Bake:
Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet. Spoon more béchamel sauce over the top and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
Bake in the oven for 5 minutes, or until the cheese on top is melted and bubbly.
Serve:
Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and sautéed mushrooms (optional).
Serve immediately with a side of salad or fries.
