I like you and your cats. We had 6 at one point. One of our 2 original cats had 4 kittens. We gave away two eventually and lived with four for a while. We even travelled with them :)).:I thought crazy cat ladies are not supposed to have kids… or hubbies.
Please keep in mind that negative / hateful comments toward you are more a reflection of the person making the comment than it is of you. What you are doing has purpose and is responsible. Not everyone embodies those attributes.

I’ve been wondering about those gates. It didn’t ever seem like it would have been original—it would have made more sense given the age of the buildings that it would be a solid wall there, and maybe a small door, if anything. I wonder if someone put in the large opening to facilitate a wagon or farm equipment?

Yes, you are doing a good job for being kind to animals… please keep it up… as for black cats, they seems to be more intelligent and usually very attached and loving with their owners, sometimes can be a little more possessive than other colored cats… I know because I had different types of cats before, white, tabby, Siamese, ginger and a female black cat… now I have a male black cat.🐈⬛ it is super intelligent, can be trained like a dog 😂.
