bonjour today we are talking about les magazin france remember fairly cool so that is what we learned previously fairly course is how you say grocery shopping now of course there are lots of different places where you can go grocery shopping in france and so that is what we are going to be talking about today so please make sure you have your hand out with all the little pictures on it and you can follow along and take notes with this video okay first things first of course they have an supermarket now unsuper mountain of course is what we would just consider a supermarket but primarily this is pretty much just food just groceries maybe a little smaller than something that we are used to so again in super mario you can see by the signs le claire le claire is one of the most common ones there’s one called casino there’s one called jayant there’s one called kauffour which you might see here in some of the other pictures but yes unsuper mario is just a supermarket now remember supermarkets have really only been around since maybe the 40s or the 50s when they decided to do one-stop shopping before this idea of a supermarket they had all these different little stores and so that’s primarily where the french still do a lot of their shopping so unsuper melchie is still a relatively newer idea so do they exist yes but the smaller stores still exist as well all right now lately as well they’ve also had on ipelmouth there’s our hyper market that is going to be even bigger than what we would consider a supermarket so an ipo mouse a might be something that we could relate to maybe target or um somewhere along the lines where they don’t just sell food but they also sell like beauty products and um maybe other sort of things like that where it’s not just food okay now they grown so fast grown so fast are the big ones the huge ones so these would be like a super kmart or a super walmart where they have food they’ve got kitchen supplies they’ve got books they’ve got um beauty supplies pretty much everything that you need and that you can get it all in one area that is going to be what the french call the grown surface okay but as i said let’s go ahead and get into the smaller ones so the first one on your uh handout is going to be un boulangerie is a bakery okay so boulangerie of course is um where they do bread and all sorts of stuff so a la boulangerie we are going to learn in this lesson dupa is bread de cuesto we know are croissants and baguette are those famous long stick breads which literally it means stick so you’re basically buying a stick of bread so a la boulangeries baguette now ki travail boulangeries so the man is unbound and the woman is unbounded now the next one in particular this is going to be your pastry shop now a lot of these are as you can see in the picture a lot of these are together with the bakery so a lot of places you’ll see boulogne patisserie together um sometimes they might be separate like sometimes it might just be a bakery but again a lot of the times you will see these together now let’s look a la petite a la petite de patisserie de brioche des eclaires is another way to say it’s not just the pastry shop it’s also the pastry itself so patisserie is just pastries brioche is a type of bun or a bread kind of like a roll uh but they might be a little sweeter than what we would have in our dinner rolls and daisy clay of course are the long um puff pastry with filling in it and frosting on top they also sell all sorts of little tarts fruit tarts things like that they will sell cakes and tarts or pies here as well but again our pies are not like their pies but yes so pastries brioche and eclairs they sell at the pastry shop now travail a la petite a la patisserie an patissier and un patissiere so once again the man the pastry maker or the pastry chef would be an patissier and then the woman pastry chef would be un patissier so an patissier un patissiere next we have the boucherie the boucherie is your butcher or your butchery butcher shop whatever we call it okay so now a la boucherre de la viond du bieftec du poulet del avion is just meat in general all right the beef tech of course is steak or one way to say steak and then du poulet then is going to be your chicken the chicken that you eat not the live animal okay so a la boucherie on von de l’avion so that is the man that works there a butcher and then boucher that would be the female okay um we consider this i would consider it more of like a deli uh when you actually do look it up it is considered or what they call a pork butcher so you don’t necessarily get your beef here you will get your pork okay so alex so of course depo is pork okay so whether it be pork chops or any sort of other product that we get from pigs from pork and of course dujambo jambol is the ham where we get it yes it is from the pig but they also have to cure it first usually so they do have to do something to the hand before they sell it to you it’s not that just like they chop up the meat and hand it to you like you would with the steak or whatnot over in the butcher shop all right so de pour de jumbo and then we have this this is you can see hanging there a lot of the times they do make homemade sausage and so if you do buy them directly from the pork butcher they will be fresh and all of that because he would make it himself all right so alex di jambo is so the man that would work there and then the woman that would work there and char coutiers okay next of course in crimea is going to be a creamery so this would be any sort of dairy products of course and you can see here on the sign it does say creamery and fromagerie so of course you’d get anything cream anything cheese here okay a la creamery du fromage we probably already know by now that du fromage is cheese du bar that’s a new one for us du bar is butter and then julie of course is a new word for us is milk once again yes you get cream you can get yogurt there um even though it’s not a dairy product a lot of the times your creamery might have eggs as well um but anything of dairy products so duchenne fromage and doule now qui travail a la cremere qui travia la crimeri an omki travis travis is just a basic grocery store this is where you would get anything where it’s not covered in these specialized stores and as you can see here in the picture episode by the way is how the french say organic so anytime you see something that is has the label of biologic or bio that is going to be anything that is organic whether it’s meat or vegetables or any other sort of product now like i said here this is going to be pretty much anything that you don’t get at the specialty stores so you don’t get your meat here you don’t get your um you might be able to get some milk here but it’s all a limited supply this is where you get anything else so du ju du cel du pois de spaghetti are just some of the things that i wrote down but this is going to be juice salt pepper spaghetti or other pasta soda bottles of water they will have a limited supply of fruits and vegetables somewhat crackers cookies um chips anything like that where like i said it is not going to be in these specialty markets and you’re not going to go to the supermarket for usually these are in town they are smaller because again they can’t um have a big area like in the heart of paris to have a humongous supermarket so usually you’re going to have these little neighborhood stores where you’re going to be able to go and like i said get your crackers or your canned goods cereal uh water sodas anything like that okay but episode is actually a piece it’s how you say spice so that’s where like i said you can get your spices like dussel du celes salt du poise is your pepper and then spaghetti of course is your spaghetti or any other type of pasta okay now a la pizzeria travail an ep an apica is the grocer and then une pisciere would be the female grocer so an apicae that is going to be anything having to do with fish okay now a la personality or any other sort of things like that du poisson of course we already know is fish okay of course they will sell fish at the fish market do a mao we’ve never seen that word before but duomo is lobster so again any other sort of seafood so like lobster crab shrimp mussels scallops anything like that any sort of shellfish they will have here and do or du sono duton is going to be tuna and we also learned that giustomo du sono is also um salmon so again any sort of seafood you will be able to buy here fresh okay that is going to be the man is going to be an e and then the female would be un poisson hello now again we usually call these it’s kind of a weird word we usually don’t use it a whole lot in english but this is going to be a fish monger sometimes the same thing for the people that make cheese we also call that a cheese monger okay but that um yeah it’s kind of a weird word but that is exactly what they call it an poisson a male fishmonger would be a female fishmonger next an moushe and usually they call them planet on planet just means an outdoor or outside and this is where these big markets are pretty much every single town in france has at least two days a week they where you’re going to have the market and it is a set day of the week for that city but they’re all going to be different for the ones around so sometimes one city might have sundays and wednesdays another city might have tuesdays and saturdays and so even if you live in an area where they don’t have a market that particular day you might be able to see or go to a town nearby which will be having the market that day it is it’s a very very neat place to go when i lived in france when i lived in poitiers our market was our big market was right across the street from my apartment and it was on sunday and wednesday mornings till about 1 or 2 p.m and they sold everything not only did you sell the the fresh products like the fruits and the vegetables and flowers you could go and get clothes or shoes or watches or hair products or all sorts of stuff you could get stuff fresh from the farmer or again people that come in and just buy all sorts of stuff soap flowers jewelry necklaces or earrings scarves uh plants all sorts of stuff it’s really really neat to go okay now omar shea on von d free de legum de fleur so of course these are the big ones you will go and get your fresh fruit you will go and get your fresh vegetables again they sell flowers um like i said depending on a lot of the times the markets they’ll see you’ll be able to buy the fresh meat and sausages and cheeses directly from the people that make them like i said a lot of the times they’ll be different artisans that sell soap and homemade jewelry and all sorts of stuff sometimes there’s even like used books but lots and lots of stuff it’s very very cool experience okay now ki travis that is going to be un-mao and um so again the man that works at the mount shay he would be unmasham and we would translate this more of a merchant okay and then the lady that works there la fan qui travail o marche is un marchand okay so like i said we’ve talked about the boulangerie the boulangerie is the bakery then we talked about the patisserie which of course is your pastry shop then the boucherie is your butcher shop charcuterie would be the deli or the pork butcher the creamery would be your creamery or again anything with your dairy products with your cheese the epicerry again is just the smaller grocery store where you get anything uh that you can’t get in the other places the poison again would be the fish or seafood and then the mouth shape like i said would be pretty much anything but mostly you would go there for your fruits and vegetables okay so hopefully you were able to write down some of your notes to work on that worksheet if you do have any questions you may go ahead and watch it again and we will be talking about more of this vocab and more of these places as we continue throughout the lesson

Very informative indeed. I just came back from a France road trip (4 weeks) and this could be very useful before I went in July.
